SUMMARY
The Solid Waste Management Coordinator is responsible for implementing and executing the town’s curbside collection and recycling program, including transitioning the current Pay-As-You-Throw sticker program to a new automated collection and billing system. This position will lead the department in further defining and executing the Solid Waste and Recycling Implementation Plan. This position will track all data necessary for reporting as it relates to solid waste, recycling, and waste diversion programming in compliance with all Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) regulations and annual grant requirements. The position requires an understanding of Federal,Recycle Cart State and Municipal solid waste and recycling regulations, and on-the-job training may be provided. This position will be responsible for providing education and outreach information to other departments, staff, and the public. This individual will also assist the Department in managing customer service inquiries and requests related to solid waste/recycling programs, including assisting with special projects related thereto. Additionally, this position will be responsible for providing quarterly internal reporting on the progress of the program’s initial launch with the target for the program’s implementation July 1st, 2026. Lastly, this position will represent the town of Maynard with State and Local level professional organizations such as MassRecycle, SWANA, NERC, etc.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (examples only - complete job description should be viewed in the link below)

  • Implement and manage, current and future curbside Solid Waste and Recycling program. Under the Direction of the Director of Public Works and/or their designee. 
  • Oversee the operations, organization, and improvements of the Town’s recycling drop-off center. Under the Direction of the Director of Public Works and/or their designee. 
  • Act as the Town’s Owners Project Manager for the curbside and drop off collection programs, managing all vendor contracts and maintaining open and frequent communication.
  • In coordination with the Public Health Agent, manage curbside enforcement tasks before, during, and after curbside collection program in accordance with the town’s rules, regulations, and local by-laws.
  • Develop outreach and educational information focused on diversion best practices and reuse programs. 
  • Coordinate and communicate all solid waste, recycling, and drop-off center information to the public utilizing a variety of mediums (website, newsletter, workshops, etc.). 
  • Coordinate with local, regional, and state organizations to meet MassDEP compliance requirements and manage community-based expectations for the solid waste, recycling, and drop-off center programs.

REPORTS TO: Director of Public Works and/or their designee

REQUIRED: Valid Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License, associate's degree in environmental science, project management or related field, or minimum 2 yeas in the solid waste and recycling industry, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills to perform the essential functions of the job.

PREFERRED: Bachelor's degree in sustainability, environmental science, public administration, or equivalent.

COMPENSATION: $30.34 per hour to $40.33 per hour, dependent on qualifications, experience, ability and skill. 19-hour work week, non-exempt.  Position is available immediately – open until filled. AA/EOE/ADA

Solid Waste Management Coordinator

The Town of Maynard is looking for qualified and credentialed Water & Sewer Operators!

SUMMARY
Responsible for supervising work crews in the maintenance of the Town’s water treatment plants. Work includes the repair of water treatment facilities and related equipment, managing distribution sampling and all chemical ordering required for treatment operations (CL2, KOH, KMno4) and any future products. Asist and work with Water and Sewer Forman to ensure a proper system is maintained.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Inspects all water treatment plants and permitted water sources daily to ensure they meet and exceed DEP requirements. Ensure treatment system is meeting and exceeding Federal and State requirements 310CMR 22 and Safe Water Drinking Act (SDWA). Check pumps, motors and chemical feed systems. Maintain a state-mandated water quality residual in treatment plants and distribution system. Assist in future Treatment Plants and techniques. Any issues in distribution and sewer system will also be completed to assist Water & Sewer Forman.

May operate hand tools including pick and shovel; operate power tools including drills, pipe cutter, pipe locator, leak locator, tapping machine, jack hammer, water pumps; may operate trucks and other heavy equipment in construction and maintenance projects. Prepare necessary reports and maintain required records.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervisory activities include assigning/reviewing work, conducting orientation for new employees, providing performance feedback, and recommending hiring decisions. Assist Water and Sewer Forman in operation requirements.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist Water and Sewer Forman for accurate payroll records.
  • May respond to miscellaneous requests, such as the turn-on and shut off of service.
  • May assist in property and watershed improvements.

REPORTS TO: Water & Sewer Foreman

REQUIRED: Valid Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License, Massachusetts Drinking Water Operator Distribution License D2, Massachusetts Drinking Water Operator Treatment License T2.

Preferred: Class 2B-1C Hoisting License, Class B with air brakes CDL Operator’s License, Massachusetts Drinking Water Operator Treatment License T3, Backflow Testers and Inspectors License. Any and all combination will be considered more advantageous.

Compensation: Grade E, Step 3: $33.82 to Grade G, Step 4: $40.00 per hour, dependent on qualifications, ability and skill. Excellent benefits package.  40-hour work week, non-exempt.  Position requires working some weekends and on-call responsibilities.   Position is available immediately – open until filled.
